Hot Spring (Onsen) Report

There are four types of hot springs that are known as "Hot spring for beauty".
"Hydrogen carbonate spring" for cleansing effect, "Sulfate spring" for wrinkle prevention and revitalization effect, and "Sulfur spring" for whitening and blemish prevention effect. And (weak) alkaline springs that remove dead skin cells of the skin. Most of the springs in Yufuin Onsen are of this quality.
Enokiya Ryokan's official spring quality name is "Weak Alkaline Simple Hot Springs" with a pH of 8.4.
Simple hot spring means that the dissolved substances such as sodium ion and bicarbonate ion are less than 1,000 mg/kg.
In simple terms, this means that it is a thinner hot spring, unlike sulfur springs or chloride springs, which have more than 1,000 mg/kg of dissolved substances. However, the hot spring at Enokiya Ryokan is about five times thicker than the kind of bath additives used at home. The simple hot spring water is gentle enough that you do not have to worry about getting a rash if you do not take a very long bath.
For this reason, it is suitable for small children, the elderly, and those with sensitive skin, and is also referred to as "Hot spring for family". It is also known as the "Hot spring for neuralgia" and "Hot spring for brain stroke" because of its spring quality, which is good for rehabilitation after illness or surgery.
Hot springs are believed to have benefits (indications) when bathed in, which are known as general indications. Details are as follows.
Chronic pain or stiffness of muscles or joints (chronic phase of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, lower back pain, neuralgia, frozen shoulder, bruises, sprains, etc.), muscle stiffness by motor paralysis, sensitivity to cold, peripheral circulatory disturbance, gastrointestinal hypofunction (slow digestion, intestinal gas formation, etc.), mild hypertension, impaired glucose tolerance (diabetes), mild hypercholesterolemia, mild asthma or emphysema, pains of hemorrhoidals, autonomic instability, various symptoms from stress (sleep disorders, depression, etc.), restorative phase from illness, recovery from fatigue, health promotions.
In addition, there are indications for each type of hot spring that can be expected to be even more effective depending on the quality of the hot spring.
The indications for simple hot springs are Autonomic instability, Insomnia, Depression, and so on.
In other words, this is a so-called mental hot spring. When the autonomic nervous system is out of balance, some people experience fatigue, headaches, nausea, excessive sweating, palpitations, irregular pulse, insomnia, dizziness, stiff shoulders, numbness in the limbs, and many other signs of illness. Bathing in a simple hot spring may means that the spring is gentle on the skin, causing less irritation, increasing relaxation, and helping to relieve stress.
In Japan, there are currently 10 types of hot springs, but only simple hot springs have "Insomnia" as an indication for specific qualities of hot springs.

As mentioned above, Enokiya Ryokan's hot spring is a "Weak Alkaline Simple Hot Springs" with 787 mg/kg of dissolved substances, but if there were more than 1,000 mg/kg of dissolved substances, the name of the spring would be "Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate and Chloride Springs".
"Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate Springs" is called "Bicarbonate of Soda Springs" in the old name of the springs, and has the effect of making the skin smooth and silky.
Another feature of "Sodium-Chloride Springs" is that the salt content blocks the sweat glands in the skin, making it difficult for the body to cool down after taking a bath.
Hot springs are natural elements, but from another angle, they are a collection of chemicals, which are the indications for their use.

A careful look at the Enokiya Ryokan's Hot Spring Analysis Report reveals that the Metasilicic acid figure is outstanding. Metasilicic acid is a natural moisturizing component, which is also a requirement for hot springs.
If it contains more than 50 mg/kg, that alone qualifies it as a hot spring.
Enokiya Ryokan's hot spring, however, contains 4 times the standard value. Because of this component, the skin feels moisturized after taking a bath.

Furthermore, the advantage of Enokiya Ryokan's hot spring is that it has its private hot spring source on site.
And that the abundance of hot spring water allows for free-flowing hot spring water.
Hot spring water is also oxidized and degraded from the source well until it reaches the bathtub.
The fact that there is a private hot spring nearby means that one can always experience fresh hot spring water.

The private bath "Kawasemi" is a set of an open-air bath and an indoor bath. The open-air bath is large enough to accommodate 10 adults at the same time. And it extends beyond the washing area and indoor bath. The quality of the spring water and the sense of openness will make you feel excited. A large indoor bath with 100% natural free-flowing spring water. The vast open-air bath is located behind it. Weak Alkaline Simple Hot Spring dissolves dead skin cells and makes your skin smooth and silky.

Facility Report

Yufuin Onsen is more than just Kyushu's representative hot spring area; it has now become an attractive area that draws people from all over the country. Furthermore, the number of visitors from outside of Japan continues to increase each year, making it a world-famous hot spring area.
Enokiya Ryokan is located near Yunotsubo Kaido, Yufuin's shopping street, and also within walking distance of Lake Kinrin-ko. The location is definitely good.
This popular inn was established in 1982, but due to a succession issue, the management was taken over by "Soan Kosumosu" a famous ryokan also in Yufuin, in May 2023. At that time, the inn underwent a major renovation and was reborn as a stylish inn.
There is a choice of accommodation options, including with two meals, breakfast, and overnight stay with no meal plan.
Dinner is at Enokiya Dining. Seasonal sushi and a la carte dishes are available.
Pub service is also available at Enokiya Tea House in the evenings.
Breakfast is also available at Enokiya Tea House. It is a half-buffet style where you choose your favorite dishes and small plates.

The guest rooms have also been redesigned, with all 12 rooms having a bed with Japanese/Western-style specifications. Half of the rooms have a small space with a large cushion where you can easily lie down, and can be said to combine the best of Japanese and Western-style rooms. There is also a small desk space on the wall, where you can enjoy reading a book.
And the inn is pet-friendly. The guest rooms have non-slip flooring that reduces the burden on pets' feet. It is also possible to bring pets for meals in the dining room.
The hot springs do not have public men's and women's baths; instead, three private baths are available.
The private baths "Kawasemi" and "Mejiro" are a set of two bathtubs: a large open-air bath and an indoor bath.
Before the renovation, there were public men's and women's large baths, and that is why they are so spacious.
Private bath "Hiyodori" is available only as an indoor bath.
These three private baths are not available by reservation, but can be used as soon as they are available. The availability of the baths can be checked on tablets placed in guest rooms, which is convenient. Basically, they can be used from the time of check-in until the next morning.

A corner introducing guided tours of Yufuin has been set up at the front desk.
The hot spring inn with a new sensibility seems to have already generated many repeat customers.

The facilities, the room, the bath... Everything was amazing and I felt like I was in a work of art. It was a waste to get out of the hot spring when the heat retention effect is enough to make you feel warm and fuzzy!
